Thibaut Courtois’ father has blamed the media of Madrid for targeting his son.
The Belgian goalkeeper has been heavily criticised by the media for his lacklustre performance against Ajax in the Champions League defeat.
Real Madrid custodian Thibaut Courtois’ father has insisted that the Madrid media has been targeting his son since his lacklustre performance against Ajax in the Champions League. The Belgian keeper conceded four goals on the night to see the reigning champions being packed out of the tournament in a shocking turn of events against the Dutch giants, who came back strongly in the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu after losing the first leg at home by 2-1. The World Cup 2018 Golden Glove winner was brought into the side last summer to take on the responsibility of guarding the goal despite having an able keeper in the form of Keylor Navas already at Real Madrid.
Courtois’ father said, “I feel that everyone is targeting Thibaut. The Spanish press, and also the Flemish. As a father, I can not ignore that.”
He added, “A goalkeeper is always the first target, it is part of the job. For right or wrong, I let you judge that. But after the match against Ajax, he was targeted because of the fourth goal after he’d played well. This single mistake has taken on huge proportions. There are also personal things that come out in the press. I see the intentions of journalists to my son. I’m struggling with that, but luckily Thibaut is above that. He knows what to do and is aware of his qualities and he will not doubt himself.”
