Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence on the rape allegations made against him in German magazine Der Spiegel. The Portuguese has said that those allegations are ‘fake news’. A woman named Kathryn Mayorga accused the Juventus forward of raping her on June 13,  2009 in Las Vegas. Mayorga also told Der Spiegel that both parties made an out-of-court settlement of $375,000 so that she would remain silent on this matter. She also said that despite the agreement, she still suffers from the consequences of the rape.

In a live video on Instagram, Ronaldo was asked about the allegations. He responded, “No, no, no, no, no – what they said today [is] fake, fake news. They wanna promote by my name, it’s normal. They wanna be famous to say my name, yeah, but it’s part of the job. I’m a happy man and all good.”

Juventus haven’t yet commented on the incident but Ronaldo’s lawyer has said that he will seek a legal compensation from Der Spiegel. He said, “It violates the personal rights of our client Cristiano Ronaldo in an exceptionally serious way. This is an inadmissible reporting of suspicions in the area of privacy. It would therefore already be unlawful to reproduce this reporting.

We have been instructed to immediately assert all existing claims under press law against Spiegel, in particular compensation for moral damages in an amount corresponding to the gravity of the infringement, which is probably one of the most serious violations of personal rights in recent years.”

Las Vegas police have said that they have reopened investigation on this matter. However, they are yet to make a final report on this. A statement from the Las Vegas police department read, “The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call of a sexual assault on June 13, 2009. At the time the report was taken, the victim did not provide detectives with the location of the incident or suspect description. A medical exam was conducted. As of September 2018, the case has been reopened and our detectives are following up on information being provided by the victim. This is an on-going investigation and no further details will be released at this time.”

So we can just wait and see what further developments take place on this issue.

This season, Ronaldo has scored three goals and has provided 5 assists from 7 matches. Sadly, he will miss out on today’s Champions League encounter against Young Boys due to suspension. The 33-year old is serving a one-match suspension due to a red card he received against Valencia. Juve’s next Serie A game is against Udinese on Saturday.
