Daley Blind’s former manager Frank De Boer has stated that he believes the Dutch international has joined Manchester United with the hope of playing in midfield for the club.

The Ajax manager has seen Blind progress through the system at Ajax, where he started out as a left back. However De Boer soon moved him into a central midfield role at the Amsterdam Arena, using him as one of the central trio in a 4-3-3.

And De Boer believes he’ll hope to continue that role at Old Trafford following his £14 million move.

‘He [Blind] started as a full-back but now prefers to be a controlling midfielder,’ de Boer told ITV.

‘He’ll have two or three options [at United] – either at wing back or on the left in a central midfield pairing’.

A left back berth will be unlikely, with United spending close to £30 million for Southampton’s Luke Shaw in that position, as well as signing the versatile Marcos Rojo who starred for Argentina in that position during this summer’s World Cup.

Saturday’s match against Queens Park Rangers will be an indicator as to where Louis Van Gaal will play Blind, as the Dutchman prepares to make his debut for his new side.
