Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has revealed that his tricky start at Old Trafford has helped him become a much better player.

After making his ÂŁ18million move from Atletico Madrid a couple of years ago, many people were questioning whether or not the Spaniard could make it in the Premier League due to it’s rough nature, and he wasn’t helped after his opening few games in England.

Several mistakes and a small-frame caused many pundits to criticise the young ‘keeper, but two seasons on he appears to have finally got to terms with the style of English football and he believes his tough ride at the beginning, has made him a better player now.

“They were difficult times. It was hard for me,” he told The Sun.

“It wasn’t easy hearing criticism but I tried to use it to motivate me and make stronger.

“I like to think that from bad things you can derive good results.”

“I was very young. I had arrived at a new club from another country, I was learning a whole new language, I was adapting to a new style of football and new team-mates,” he said.

“That’s a lot to take in and I think it’s natural that it will take a little bit of time to settle.”
