Manchester United manager David Moyes has jumped to the defence of midfielder Thomas Cleverley, labelling him a ‘fantastic, young player’.

The England international has come under a lot of scrutiny by all football fans this season for his below-par performances, and despite his poor form for his club, Cleverley is still earning call-ups for his country thanks to Roy Hodgson.

Midweek, Hodgson defended the midfielder and rubbished the online petition which has been set up to ban the midfielder from playing for his country, and it looks like Moyes agrees with Hodgson as he has defended his player as well.

Moyes said: “Tom Cleverley is a fantastic young player who is developing all the time.

“He is a great trainer and is someone who is first out and every day does his best in training.”

The 24-year-old has been receiving a lot of abuse via social networking sites, and a lot of people are suggesting that he wouldn’t get into the England team if he didn’t play for Manchester United.

The petition to ban the midfielder has now been signed by over 15,000 people.
