David Silva has been named as the new club captain of Premier League champions Manchester City.

He will succeed Kompany, while Aguero, Fernandinho and De Bruyne and are named vice-captains.

The Spain international topped a vote from his team-mates to take the armband after Pep Guardiola put the decision to his players.

The experienced former Spain international, who signed from Valencia in 2010 and has won 10 major trophies at the Etihad Stadium, takes over the armband from Vincent Kompany, who joined Anderlecht as player-manager at the end of last season.

In June, Silva announced that this will be his tenth and last season at City.

Speaking at his press conference on Friday, Guardiola said: “David Silva will be the team captain.”

“A captain has to be what he is,” the City manager said ahead his side beginning their quest for a third consecutive Premier League title at West Ham. “It’s an incredible, big respect from his mates. The decision they have to take is the best thing for the club.

“David has to be himself, make decisions for the team. He has been with a club for almost a decade. Normally, it depends what the captain is like when in the locker room. They are nice guys, they know each other, they laugh a lot. It will not be a problem. He will be a good captain.”

David Silva wore the captain armband for the first time today, as Raheem Sterling’s hat-trick helped his side stuck five past West Ham. He came off the pitch with 20 minutes to go, at 80′, giving the armband to Sergio Aguero.

The former Spain intentional, who has won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups during his time at the Citizens, featured in 33 league games last season as Pep Guardiola’s side retained their crown as part of a domestic treble. The midfielder is on the verge of reaching a jubilee of 400 total appearances for the Blue side of Manchester since leaving Valencia in 2010.
