Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermaine Defoe admits he needs to start playing for Tottenham more regularly if he is to gain a place on the plane to Brazil, as Roy Hodgson plans his side in detail for next summer’s showpiece in Brazil.

Defoe was a substitute for last night’s fixture, and came on for the final 24 minutes at Wembley in England’s defeat to Chile, as Alexis Sanchez inspired the South American’s to a deserved victory in a lacklustre England perfoemance.

The performance raised doubt’s about England’s realistic chances of a World Cup win, as an uninspiring performance left many asking for answer’s of how the side could be beaten so easily on home soil.

Defoe has struggled to secure a regular starting spot for Spurs this season, starting just one Premier League game this season, with manager Andre Villas-Boas choosing Spanish striker Roberto Soldado, to lead the line for an unconvincing Tottenham side.

The recent signing from Valencia has struggled to adapt to the Premier League, and has been part of a Tottenham side who have scored just nine goals in the League this season, following Sunday’s defeat to Newcastle United, as Spurs spent the majority of the money they recieved for Gareth Bale, on improving their front line.

Defoe has been used in the League Cup and the Europa League, as Villas-Boas usually rotates his side to those competitions anyway. The striker has been in form in those respective competitions, scoring nine goals.

“Getting into a World Cup squad is based on merit and you have to play for your club,” stated Defoe.

s a forward, if you are not getting the opportunities to play it will be difficult.

“It’s important that everyone goes back to their clubs and plays games to try to impress the manager.

“It’s a long way to go before the World Cup. There is a lot of football to be played and we will see what happens. You never know, I might play every game from now on.”

As for the defeat to Chile, Defoe concedes the result was disappointing but backed Hodgson’s decision to offer different players the chance to impress.

“It’s not good losing, especially at home,” added Defoe.

“You want that winning mentality going into a World Cup but there were spells where we did well and created some good chances, it could have been a different game had we put them away.

The striker has been linked with Canadian side Toronto FC, MLS side LA Galaxy, and he has also been linked with a return to West Ham United, after admitting he regretted leaving the East London club.

Can Defoe get on that plane ? That is the question.
