Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli spoke about his desire to become the club’s captain some day. Alli led Spurs in their Carabao Cup fixture against Watford in the absence of Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane. The match was held at the home of Alli’s former club Milton Keynes Dons.

Watford got the lead early in the second half before Alli scored late from the spot to level. In the 86th minute, Erik Lamela gave Tottenham the lead before Etienne Capoue netted a late equaliser. The match eventually went to penalties and Alli scored the winning penalty as Spurs won 4-2.

Following the match, Alli said, “It was good, it was a little bit too big for me but it was a massive honour for me. I spoke to the gaffer yesterday and he asked me if I wanted to be [captain] and it was a real privilege. I think it’s important when we’re out on the pitch that we know we need to have 11 leaders out there, but it was a huge honour.”

When asked if he wanted to become Tottenham’s permanent captain someday, Dele Alli said, “If you asked the boys about my speech before they might disagree, but I think I want to be a leader out there anyway and whether I’ve got the armband or not it’s important that that is my mentality.

Tottenham Hotspur play their next Premier League fixture against Huddersfield Town on Saturday. Spurs will hope to return to the top four in the table by beating Huddersfield.
