France manager Didier Deschamps has said that he is surprised by the comments made by former France international Laurent Koscielny. Koscielny re-confirmed his decision to retire from international football on Sunday and took a dig at Deschamps. The 33-year old said that Deschamps forgot him after his injury. The Arsenal defender also added that France’s World Cup win did a lot of psychological damage to him.
When asked about Koscielny’s comments, Deschamps opted to defend himself. He said, “I was surprised, as was my entire staff. Because all of us at a certain moment have sent messages of support. Me myself, I have called him after his injury, I discussed with him, even about the choice of his surgeon.
I invited him to join us in the preparation, to spend some time with us.”
France play their third Nations League fixture against Germany at Saint-Denis tonight. Germany are in dire need of a win to keep their chances in the tournament alive.
