Diego Simeone provided an update on Joao Felix injury after the £120m club-record signing limped off the friendly match against Numancia last weekend.

The 19-year-old did not take part in the next International Champion’s Cup game against Guadalajara but he is expected to be fit for the Real Madrid derby on Friday.

“He’s a little hurt. It’s an annoying blow, but we need it to be fine,” Simeone told reporters when asked about Felix’s fitness “He trained in the morning without problems. I imagine tomorrow he will play for a while or start from the beginning.”

Atletico look like a completely new side with most of their veteran stars gone. One of the names who has still stuck around despite getting linked with a move away has been Diego Costa.

The Spaniard scored only 2 La Liga goals last season but he has still managed to keep the faith of Simeone. The Rojiblancos head coach believes that Costa still has the talent to be instrumental for his side next season.

He added, “Diego heard me speak in times of difficulty. I don’t change a comma in everything I think. I am convinced that it will be a great season for him and his team-mates.”
