Hornets break club transfer fee to sign midfielder

Watford Football Club have announced the signing of Etienne Capoue from Tottenham Hotspur for a club record fee.

The Frenchman has signed a four-year contract with the newly-promoted Premier League side after the two clubs agreed on a fee believed to be around ÂŁ5.5million, which is Watford‘s record transfer fee.

The Hornets are also in talks with Spurs over the transfer of Benjamin Stambouli, but that deal has not yet been announced as talks continue between the player and the club.

After arriving at his new club, Capoue had this to say to the official Watford website: “I’m very excited to come here to join the club and to participate in this big project.

Capoue Statement

“The president was very happy to try to bring me here and I spoke with him a lot of times, and we found a good way to do the best for the club.

“I have known Heurelho Gomes for two years and he told me a lot of good things about the club, and this played a part in me choosing Watford.

“For me it’s an opportunity to play. I need to play and to prove my qualities on the pitch, and I think Watford is the best thing for me.”

“I hope I’ll bring my technical passing football, and my experience in the Premier League, and I hope we’ll do very well this year and stay in the Premier League,” he added.

“We need some experience because the Championship is very different to the Premier League. The games are very difficult so we need players like Gomes to help us do our best every weekend.

“I’m looking forward to playing games and I’ll be focused every weekend, because our goal is to stay in the Premier League.”

Capoue’s Premier League Career

As for Capoue, he will arrive at Vicarage Road with 24 Premier League appearances to his name during his two-year stint with Spurs after he arrived at White Hart Lane in 2013.

Capoue was one of eight Spurs signed after they sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for ÂŁ85million.
