Premier League new-boys complete signing of winger

AFC Bournemouth have signed Max Gradel from St Etienne for an undisclosed fee.

The winger used to play for The Cherries when he was on loan at the club during the 2007/2008 campaign, and he has now returned to the club after the two teams agrees on a fee.

The 27-year-old has signed a four-year deal at the club and has become the seventh summer signing for Eddie Howe‘s men as he looks to strengthen his side ahead of their debut season in the Premier League.

Gradel has been in France for four years after he agreed to leave Leeds United and he was a major part in the club’s fifth placed finished in Ligue 1 last season.

The winger scored 17 goals in 23 games during the 2014/2015 campaign.

After signing for the club, Gradel spoke to the club’s official website and revealed how it felt to be back at the club.

Gradel Statement

“It’s a good feeling,” Gradel told Cherries Player HD.

“I am so happy. I had a great time here before so I’m very excited to be back.

“It feels a little bit strange because everything has changed. When I first arrived today I didn’t recognise the club, but I am very happy to see it is all moving in a good direction.

“Not many people will understand why I came to Bournemouth. I had offers for more money and bigger clubs but in football you have to go where you will be happy.

“There were other options, like to play Champions League football in Russia, but I decided to come here because I like Eddie a lot. He’s always been there for me so it’s a big honour to now come and play for him.

“Of course he’s a good manager but on top of that he’s a good person and we have a good relationship. I trust him and I am looking forward to working with him.”

Manager Statement

Bournemouth manager, Howe, also spoke to the club’s website after the signing was announced.

“I am delighted to have brought someone of Max’s quality and calibre to the football club,” Howe told the Daily Echo.

“Having worked with him when I was a young coach and he was a young player, we built up a strong relationship.

“I have followed his career ever since and never thought I would be fortunate enough to be able to sign him permanently for this club.

“I think it is a real achievement to be able to bring him in and attract him to the club. Hopefully he will enjoy his second time here.

“He is a great character and someone who has real enthusiasm for the game. When I worked with him before, he always wanted to run, to work hard and to improve.

“He had real ability and was an eye-catching performer. Our supporters took to him straight away and, hopefully, they will do that again. I have no doubts that they will rekindle their love for him.”
