Latics confirm the signing of former Bolton Wanderers stalwart

Wigan Athletic have completed the signing of veteran goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen on a one-year deal.

The 40-year-old Finn, who made 474 league appearances for Latics’ North West rivals, Bolton Wanderers over a 15 year stay, links up with the League One side after his contract with West Ham United expired earlier this summer.

Prior to making the move to the DW Stadium, Jaaskelainen had trained with fellow third-tier side, Bradford City – as he looked to prolong his playing career.

But the former Finland international has opted to extend his stay in professional football with the Latics, and will serve as competition for fellow goalkeepers, Richard O’Donnell and Lee Nicholls.

Gary Caldwell delighted at the acquisition of Jaaskelainen

After Jaaskelainen penned a deal at the recently-relegated side, Wigan manager Gary Caldwell praised his new keeper, in an interview with the club website.

Caldwell said: “Jussi has had a tremendous career and was consistently one of the top keepers in the Premier League. He is still in fantastic condition and as well as providing great competition in the squad, his experience will be invaluable on and off the park.”
