Everton manager Roberto Martinez is delighted about McCarthy’s decision to commit his long-term future
McCarthy has extended his contract with the Goodison Park club in spite of interest from Tottenham.
The Republic of Ireland international still had three more years left on his current contract, but will receive a much higher salary.
The former Wigan Athletic winger was happy to extend his contract at Everton and thanked the fans for their continued support.
“I’m buzzing and delighted to be committing my future long-term to Everton, I’ve loved every minute here, with the fans having made me feel so welcome from day one.
“This is a brilliant club with a brilliant fan base and what we want to try to do is bring some success here and push forward” said McCarthy.
Manager’s comments
Martinez acknowledged how important his current crop of players are and admitted McCarthy’s decision to stay with the club is massive.
“When you are trying to shape a squad, it’s vital to be able to build also on the continuity of top performers at the club and James represents that.
“That vital element of continuity in the squad is a great boost for the club, with James committing to a new, long-term contract” said Martinez.
Another Everton player, John Stones, looks more unlikely to be at Goodison Park club next season as Chelsea are reportedly planning a third bid of around £30million.
