The Clarets have confirmed the signing of free agent Joey Barton

Former QPR midfielder Joey Barton has completed his move to Turf Moor on a one-year deal.

Burnley fought off competition from a number of Championship and Premier League sides to secure Barton’s services, who is now at the 5th club of his career.

It looked like the 32-year-old was set for a move to West Ham earlier this month, having completed his medical at West Ham, the club then pulled the plug on the deal after backlash from supporters.

Barton’s career

Having come through Manchester City’s academy he enjoyed five years there, making over 150 appearances.

Barton then had a four-year stint on Tyneside with Newcastle United before signing for QPR in 2011.

He was famously sent off on the final day of the 2011/12 season against former side Manchester City, a day more famously remembered for Aguero’s last-minute strike to gift City their first title in 44 years.

Barton spent a season on loan at Marseille before returning to QPR in 2013 and helped them return to the Premier League after a 1-0 play-off victory over Derby County.

Following the Hoops’ relegation last season, manager Chris Ramsey did not see Barton as part of his plans and the former England international was released.

Delighted Dyche

Speaking to the club’s website, Sean Dyche said: “I’m delighted that we have Joey on board.

“He was very respectful when speaking about our  club at the end of last season and during the summer.

“We had many conversations and he made it clear he was very interested in what we are about and that coming here was something he would consider.

“He is player who is in demand and who others think highly of. I know there is other stuff to his life and character, but on the pitch I think everyone speaks well of him.”
