Two key players set to leave Westfalenstadion this summer

Mats Hummels and Ilkay Gundogan will leave struggling Borussia Dortmund this summer, according to chief executive Hans Joachim Watzke.

A statement from Watzke admitted two key players will leave, with Gundogan refusing a new deal which had been offered to him.

“We have already finished talking with the player (Gundogan) and as he did not want to extend his relationship with us, we have thought that he could leave this summer.” Michael Zorc, sporting director at Dortmund, said.

The 24-year-old midfielder is understood to be ready to join Manchester United for a fee in the region of ÂŁ20 million.

While Hummels could be heading to Old Trafford also, with Arsenal are also thought to be interested.

No overhaul at Dortmund

Although the news of their departures will sadden and potentially annoy Dortmund fans, Watzke feels there should be no cause for concern.

“There will be no major overhaul. Last year one player left [Robert Lewandowski who joined Bayern Munich], this year it is probably two.” Watzke said.

“Everything else is still open. So yes, there will be change but not a complete overhaul of the team.

“As for any of the other cases, I will not talk about names.”

Dortmund are currently seventh in the Bundesliga, narrowly outside a European place and a massive 33 points off leaders Bayern Munich, who they faced in the Champions League final only two season ago.
