Stewart Downing has said that he could still get into Liverpool’s first team, and West Ham’s win over his former club was ‘extra sweet’.

The former Liverpool man started for West Ham in their 3-1in over his former team at up Upton Park last week. He was deemed surplus to requirements last summer by Brendan Rodgers following two seasons at Anfield.

He said: ‘Last week was sweet. We were really confident of beating them, with the problems they’ve had of late.

‘I thought we could hurt them. Brendan has bought a helluva lot of players but I still look and think I could get in that team.’

Downing still had two years to run on his contract at Anfield but admits the writing was on the wall after being restricted to a bit-part role.

‘I went to see Brendan and he was saying there was no problem. But there obviously was,’ he told media

‘I was sat in the stands with young kids, playing on Thursday nights in the Europa League with all the young lads and it was the worst three or four months of my career. I never thought of packing football in but I didn’t like the way I was treated.

‘He put that headline out, saying I needed to ‘fight’ more. It hurt. If you ask all the managers I’ve played for, I always try, always train hard. If Brendan had a problem with me, if he’d pulled me and told me, then no problem. He didn’t. It hurt the way he did it.

‘I went to see him, November time, and he just said to me: “This isn’t going to happen for you here, basically find a new club.”‘
