Bournemouth boss in running for National job

Bournemouth manage Eddie Howe is firmly in the running for the England job after admitting it would be the ‘ultimate job’.

Football Association director of elite development Dan Ashworth is a huge fan of Howe, and that means that the 38-year-old is likely to be on a 3-man shortlist for the role.

He joins Under-21 manager Gareth Southgate, who is set to take over the team for the next 4 games, and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who was a candidate after Roy Hodgson’s departure.

Wenger’s contract at Arsenal is expiring next summer, meaning he could be ready to move on after 20 years with the Gunners.

Howe is seen as a promising up-and-coming English coach and knows Ashworth well — he was his guest, sitting next to him, at England’s final pre-Euro 2016 warm-up game against Portugal in June.

If Southgate messes up his ‘interview’ in the next 4 games with the side and Wenger opts to stay at Arsenal, it will be Howe who is next in line to be considered.

Howe admitted on Thursday that he was flattered by the England talk, but insisted he is committed to Bournemouth.

“They haven’t come to me and my message would be similar to any job I’ve been linked with – I am very committed here and I love the job, I have a lot more work to do here,” he said.

“The England job is the ultimate job but I’ve signed players very recently here and pledged my future to them this season and how it is going to unfold.

“I couldn’t turn my back on this club, the people who employ and the loyalty they have shown me, I need to show that in return.

“My aims are to lead this club forward and progress in the Premier League and improve on last season – that is my only thought.

“It sounds quite arrogant, but I am not interested in the job right now but who knows what happens in the future.”
