Eidur Gudjohnsen has been named in Iceland’s squad for the 2016 European Championships in France, at the age of 37.

Gudjohnsen, who has made 84 appearances for his country over an international career which has spanned 20 years, will feature for Lars Lagerback and Heimir Hallgrimsson’s side, when the Championships kick-off in June.

Having become the most celebrated professional footballer on the island of Iceland, Gudjohnsen’s illustrious career in the game has seen him win the Premier League title with Chelsea, and La Liga and Champions League triumphs in Spain with FC Barcelona.

He has also had two spells at Bolton Wanderers, along with short-term deals with Stoke City, Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham.

A short spell in China with Shijiazhuang Ever Bright ended last November, and he has been with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Molde in Norway since February – with the intention of playing regular football to secure a place at Euro 2016.

Co-manager, Lars Lagerback said: “If he hadn’t found a club in January, he would not have been picked.” – while Hallgrimsson added: He has taken a step up at Molde. He looks fitter and has shown the desire necessary.”

Gudjohnsen retired from international duty in November 2013 after Iceland failed to reach the 2014 World Cup, but later reversed his decision, and was recalled to the squad last March – he later helped his country to their first ever international tournament.

Iceland have been placed into Group F in France this summer – they will start their maiden campaign on June 14th against Portugal, before fixtures against Hungary and Austria.
