The First leg of the round saw Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund taking huge strides towards the next leg of the tournament, and saw Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur go into the second leg with a mountain to climb.

The First Leg of the round of 16 between Liverpool and Manchester United ended with a 2-0 win for Liverpool. Daniel Sturridge gave The Merseyside club the lead from the spot after Memphis Depay fouled Nathaniel Clyne, and Roberto Firmino added a second from close range with 73 minutes on the clock.

In an otherwise disappointing performance from the Red Devils, one outstanding individual display came from Spanish Goalkeeper David De Gea. Without his magnificent showing in the first leg, there is no doubt that Manchester United would completely be out of contention for the second leg.

With Manchester United’s ever-growing injury list, it is very difficult to see a turn around in fortune for the club, and it’s looking likely that they won’t progress to the quarter finals.

Spurs look to build on league wins:

Elsewhere, in the first leg tie between Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund,  Spurs succumbed to a disappoint 3-0 loss at the hands of the German side. a first half goal from Aubameyang and a brace from Marco Reus sealed a win for Dortmund.

Sunday’s comfortable 2-0 victory over Aston Villa was a perfect response to their Europa League first leg setback – and has revived the mood in north London -Though for Pochettino’s men, the second leg seems to be nothing more than just an exercise. This means that there is a strong chance that many regular first-team players will be rested in order for the North London club to focus on their league endeavours.
