The Gunners are desperate for centre-backs after Per Mertesacker and Gabriel suffered long-term injuries in pre-season.
They are closing in on Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi, but manager Arsene Wenger wants to continue strengthening his back-line.
And Mathieu is the man on their radar, according to SFR Sport.
Barcelona have signed defenders Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne this summer, pushing Mathieu down the ranks in Catalonia.
This could mean that Barca boss Luis Enrique is willing to listen to offers for the 32-year old France international.
