Hughton showers praise on Murray after West Brom win

Glenn Murray’s brace in extra time helped Brighton overturn a 1-0 deficit against West Brom in the FA Cup fourth-round replay after Florin Andone cancelled out Kyle Bartley’s opener at the Hawthorns.

And manager Chris Hughton was pleased with his team’s efforts, claiming that the quality on the bench helped them progress to the next round.

He said, “We made hard work of it — we got into some really good positions and found ourselves 1-0 down. But once the tide turned a little bit, I thought we showed our quality.

“The first game in some ways was a little bit similar. I thought we had some really good possession and chances, but you need that one goal to get back into it.

“I knew we would push right to the end, but this is a cup tie and we had ample opportunities before that. We got into some really good positions and sometimes you think it’s not going to be your day.

“You just need that little bit of quality or fortune to get back into the game. Once we got that, I was confident that we could go on and win it. But it’s the FA Cup and you never know.”

“Not only the goal, but it was the attitude Glenn showed. He came on and wanted to make an impact, and that’s what happens when you bring substitutes on, you want them to impact the game.

“He certainly came on with a spring in his step and we’re grateful for that.

“What we need is to be spreading these goals around the team a little more, but if you said to me ‘would you rather have somebody in form that’s scoring goals than support from elsewhere?’, then, of course, I would say, ‘yes’.

“Anthony’s season has been a little bit up and down in regards to playing, but he showed his real quality today — not only the quality he’s got, but he also worked really hard and made an impact.”
