Shane Duffy speaks on the positives from the 1-0 defeat against Liverpool

Brighton’s resilience and character on the pitch was not enough to prevent them from going 1-0 down to Liverpool on Saturday but centre-back Shane Duffy believes that his team have improved against the top sides in the Premier League.

Mohamed Salah’s goal from the penalty spot in the second half was enough for the Reds to claim all three points after the Egyptian was brought down inside the box by Pascal Gross.

Duffy, however, was of the opinion that Brighton did well to keep the opposition at bay for large quarters of the match even though they didn’t create any clear-cut opportunities.

He said, “I always say we’re improving and if you see how we’ve done against the big teams we’re always in the games. I’m sure if you asked Liverpool, they’d say they’ve had a tough game.
“I thought we put the effort in, but obviously didn’t create too many clear-cut chances. At half-time, we were delighted, despite them having most of the possession and most of the chances. I thought that with all our effort we probably could’ve nicked a point.”
Speaking of the positives from that narrow 1-0 defeat, the Irishman emphasized that the top teams are adept at capitalising on the slightest of mistakes.
“We worked hard to at least stay in the game and one mistake cost us. You have to be focused, and you don’t want to push too early because Liverpool can embarrass you.
“We said at half-time to stay in the game for as long as possible and we might get a chance. It didn’t happen for us, but I thought we defended well and we made it hard for them.”
The Irishman also spoke about the penalty decision leading to the goal which saw Pascal Gross penalised for a challenge on Salah, and felt the German was faced with a thankless task.
“It’s tough for Pascal, he’s up against one of the best players in the league and I felt that we could’ve helped him out a bit more. He got caught a bit and Salah moves the ball quickly, so it’s unfortunate.”
