Borussia Dortmund keen on signing Liverpool target

The chief executive of Borussia Dortmund has admitted that the club would like to re-sign Mario Gotze.

Liverpool are also keen admirers of Gotze, the midfielder played under Reds manager Jurgen Klopp at Dortmund.

Gotze left Dortmund in 2013 for fellow Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, making him at that time the most expensive German player of all time, before the record was broken by Mesut Ozil’s move to Arsenal.

He has struggled to hit the same heights for Bayern, although he did grab a goal and an assist against his former employers in a 5-1 victory in October 2015.

Hans-Joachim Watzke, Dortmund’s chief-executive, has seemingly thrown Die Schwarzgelben into the frame for their former player.

“If Mario Götze  comes on the market… we would discuss it,” Watzke admitted while speaking at a conference on Monday.

“He has been through all the youth teams with us,” he added. “He is held in the greatest esteem.”

Watzke’s optimism of signing Gotze does not seem to have spread to Dortmund fans, however.

Earlier this month, fans at Signal Iduna Park unveiled a banner reading: “Milan or Madrid – the main thing is not Dortmund! P*** off Götze.”

Watzke went on to add that the interests of Dortmund supporters were important to any potential deal.

“The thing is, we have to take our fans seriously. Especially those who are always there, their view is critical.”
