Manchester City and Manchester United are set to do battle in the transfer market this summer, bidding for the services of the player dubbed the ‘new Nemanja Vidic’.

Torino defender Nikola Maksimovic has earned rave reviews for his performances in Serie A this season for the Turin-based club.

The 24-year-old has also drawn the attentions of the likes of Tottenham, AC Milan, Roma, Juventus and West Ham United.

However, Tuttosport are reporting that the two Manchester clubs are at the head of the queue.

Maksimovic is thought to be available for ÂŁ20m. He signed for Torino from Red Star Belgrade in 2014 for ÂŁ3.2m.

Incoming City boss Pep Guardiola has made strengthening the defence a priority when he takes the reins in the summer.

While United have brought through a couple of young central defenders this season, in Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

In  his native Serbia, Maksimovic is frequently compared to former United defender Vidic.

Vidic, who retired earlier this year, made over 200 league appearances for the Red Devils between 2006 and 2014.
