Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has asked the club to buy Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk and the club have started talks with the Saints for his signature.

Manchester City have held talks with Southampton for Virgil Van Dijk’s services according to reports.

The Netherlands international has long been linked with a move to Liverpool and the Anfield side even got into trouble for ‘tapping up’ the player.

The Guardian now reports that Pep Guardiola is desperate to sign the centre-back and City have already got into contact with Southampton to sign the Dutch centre-back.

Van Dijk submitted a transfer request last summer and was determined to leave the Saints but Southampton blocked his move to Liverpool.

And now, it’s reported that a £60m transfer bid would be enough to secure him. And at 26-years-old, Van Dijk is viewed as the long-term replacement for the ageing and oft-injured Vincent Kompany.

Chelsea are also in the running to sign V

Chelsea are also eager to sign Van Dijk with manager Antonio Conte recently warning the league that City should be stopped from signing him.

‘Every team, every club, must pay great attention,’ said the Chelsea manager. ‘Because if a club like Manchester City takes all the best [players], it will be very difficult for us to fight. Not only in England but in Europe.’

Manchester City have also been linked with Chelsea’s young defender Andreas Christensen but the Blues are unlikely to let him leave or join a rival club.
