Manchester united succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to local rivals Man City in what was as Jose Mourinho described an unlucky defeat.

But one player came under heavy scrutiny for his performance after the game.

New signing Romelu Lukaku’s lackluster performance was discussed by many pundits including Alan Shearer and he didn’t pull any punches to the Belgian.

“No one was asking these questions earlier on in the season when Lukaku was scoring 11 goals in his first 10 games,’ Shearer told Match of the Day 2.

“He’s not doing enough in games – and I hate saying it – to justify his fee.

“He looks to be lacking in confidence, two in 14 now but in his defence with some of the balls and some of the service he was feeding on scraps.

“Everything seems a second or two too slow and by the time he’s made his mind up it’s gone.”

Lukaku has endured a goal drought lately after having a fast start to life at United where he scored 11 goals in 10 games.

And as Shearer alluded to-Lukaku has only scored twice in his last 14 matches.

The Belgian has also struggled to score goals against the big teams after only scoring four times in 40 Premier League appearances against the top six sides.

The 24-year-old was also partially to blame for both of City’s goals in their recent defeat which led to Gary Neville telling Lukaku to get over his lack of confidence quickly.

“You look at him today and he struggled,’ Neville told SkySports.

“I’m not just talking about struggling in terms of missing a chance, he struggled at being in the game and being confident in the game.

“He’s got to get over that quickly as he’s Manchester United’s centre-forward.
