The £40 million-rated Uruguayan has been impressive since joining Atletico Madrid from Danubio in 2013

Manchester United have joined Arsenal in the race for highly-rated Uruguayan defender Jose Gimenez, after scouting the 21-year-old in recent months.

The Gunners are already understood to have made enquires with the La Liga outfit, regarding his availability – and the Atletico defender could be seen as the long-term replacement for Per Mertesacker, whose contract at the Emirates runs out next summer.

But United boss Jose Mourinho has been alerted of Giminez’s quality and the Portuguese has made no secret of the fact that he wants to bring in another top class defender, after missing out on Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.

However, if either club are to secure the signing of the Atletico man, it will set them back ÂŁ40 million. But Arsene Wenger isn’t a manager to throw his cash about and may have some reservations about paying such a fee for a player who is only 21.

Gimenez is also known for having an eye for goal, which is ironic considering United’s scouting mission on the Uruguayan’s teammate, Antoine Griezmann.

But both could head to Old Trafford in the summer, with Diego Simeone set to depart the Vicente Calderon at the end of the campaign and the future of some of the club’s key players being brought into question.
