United youngster returns to Old Trafford

Barnsley loanee Ashley Fletcher has given the biggest hint yet that he will return to Manchester United, following his loan spell with the League One club.

The 20-year-old, who netted twice in the Tykes’ 3-1 play-off final win over Millwall and once in the club’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy triumph, took to Twitter to thank the fans following his departure.

“Firstly, I would like to thank everyone associated with Barnsley Football Club.” Fletcher wrote in his Twitter post.

“From all the players, to the staff and board, and the incredible fans who have all supported me throughout my time at the club.

“I would never have dreamed of my achievements we as a team have created before I came.

“I still have a lot to learn in the game but this experience can only benefit me in the future and I thank you once again for being a part of this! Good luck next season and thank you once again. #YOUREDS”

Fletcher looks set to stay with Manchester United, or potentially be loaned out to a Premier League side, if the striker’s message to the Barnsley fans is true, and that he won’t return to Oakwell next season.

It would seem likely, that if Fletcher returns to the Championship, he would return to Barnsley. But it seems like his intentions are to break into new boss Jose Mourinho’s plans at the Red Devils.

However, one Marcus Rashford could hinder his development, having miraculously scored on his Europa League and Premier League debut for United, and scored on his senior England debut also – all within the space of three months.

Fletcher netted six times in 23 appearances for Barnsley, and will now be inspired by Rashford’s rapid rise to success, and will hope to be the next young star to make his breakthrough and link up with the fellow academy graduate next season.
