Former United star urges the club to wait before handing permanent job to Solskjaer

Gary Neville urges Manchester United to wait before handing permanent job to Solskjaer

Ex Manchester United star Gary Neville warns the club that it is too early to hand caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a permanent job.

The Englishman said that the Norwegian’s credentials will be tested in the upcoming games against Paris-Saint German, Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Victory over Leicester City meant United have now won nine out of the 10 games under Solskjaer, the only blemish being the home draw against Burnley last midweek.

Such has been the impact of the former striker, that he has leapfrogged Mauricio Pochettino to take the permanent hotseat at Old Trafford.

Neville said that with the tougher games coming game, the manager’s resolve will be tested and it is too early to hand him the job now.

He said: “I think that’s far too early [to appoint Solskjaer].

“If you’d have said to me when he got the job what the chances were as a percentage, I’d have said probably 25 per cent.

“He’s had an incredible run. He’s got a far greater percentage chance now – maybe 50, 60 per cent – but Chelsea away in the FA Cup, PSG in the Champions League, Liverpool, today against Leicester.

“There’s a huge challenge coming in the next five, six weeks and I think the end of March, early April is the right time to assess the body of work that Ole’s done.”

Manchester United have an away game at Fulham next week, before a mammoth first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie against PSG at Old Trafford.
