Manchester United announced on Monday that manager Erik ten Hag had been fired following the team’s 1-2 Premier League loss to West Ham. The setback in London was United’s fourth league loss in nine games, dropping them to 14th place in the standings.

Erik ten Hag has resigned from his position as manager of Manchester United’s first team. Man United announced in an official statement that the Dutchman, who was hired in April 2022, guided the team to two domestic trophies: the FA Cup in 2024 and the Carabao Cup in 2023. “We hope Erik has a bright future and are thankful for everything he has done while he has been with us.”

An interim replacement, Ruud van Nistelrooy, is anticipated to be in charge of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match against Leicester City at Old Trafford. With just 11 points from nine league games, there are already worries that United could fall too far behind to earn a spot in the Champions League the following season.

Additionally, the Premier League’s final season results and performances were considered. United lost at the London Stadium on Sunday, dropping them to 14th place in the standings from eighth place the previous season. Ratcliffe and his INEOS team, however, chose to prolong Ten Hag’s employment until June 2026 in spite of discussions with possible successors. Rene Hake, the former manager of Go Ahead Eagles, and Van Nistelrooy, who played for United from 2002 to 2006, joined the reorganized backroom staff.
