The Bundesliga side are now the favourites to sign him
According to reports in England, Schalke 04 are looking to hijack Manchester United’s deal for Basel centre forward Breel Embolo.
Embolo, 19, is currently playing in Euro 2016 as a part of the Switzerland squad, but that has not stopped speculation surrounding his club future.
German website SportBild claimed last week that United were the front-runners to sign Embolo, despite newly promoted Bundesliga side Red Bull Leipzig tabling a bid of around £16 million for his services.
“We’ve informed the agent of Embolo and Basel that we are no longer interested in his transfer,” said Leipzig manager Ralf Ragnick when he spoke to German newspaper Leipziger Volkszeitung.
Not clear cut
However, even though Leipzig have withdrawn their interest, the Red Devils’ boss Jose Mourinho isn’t guaranteed the signing of Embolo.
This is because Schalke are prepared to offer £20 million for the Swiss superstar, who could put pen-to-paper on a contract after the European Championships in France.
