Rafa Benitez thinks Newcastle United supporters may have expected the results due to the club’s opening few fixtures.

The Magpies have been handed a very cruel fixture as they had to encounter Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal in a run of games. The Tyneside club also had a very poor transfer window which saw very little activity in the summer.

Benitez sold Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham who could have solved their crisis for goals. There has also been concern regarding his future but as of now, the former Liverpool manager is staying at the St James Park.

Newcastle are currently struggling in the relegation zone and if things are not improved soon their Premier League status might be in danger. Benitez said, “The fans, they can see from the beginning the fixtures and say, ‘Hmmm…’. I remember reading your comments, ‘Hopefully we can win against Cardiff because it’s an (important) game’.

“We drew against Cardiff, we could have won.

“But to lose against the top sides and to lose by this margin is something that everybody could have expected. But still we are not happy with that, for sure.

“It’s something that we have to manage now and be sure that we keep the confidence and we keep working like we did in the first half.”
