While Tottenham Hotspur and Atletico Madrid reached a €40 million (£34.7 million) deal for the midfield player, Conor Gallagher is scheduled to travel to England on Tuesday for a physical and to confirm the terms of a long-term contract.

Aston Villa was also very interested in Gallagher, but their desire to keep their finances under control prevented any deals from being made. After joining Atletico from Chelsea in a £38 million move during the summer of 2024, the 25-year-old England international has lived in Spain for 18 months.

In his debut season, he made 50 appearances and scored four goals as a regular under Diego Simeone. Gallagher has only made four La Liga starts this season, despite being included in the starting lineup for Thursday’s Supercopa de Espana defeat to Real Madrid.

After spending time on loan at Charlton Athletic, Swansea City, West Bromwich Albion, and Crystal Palace, Gallagher—who came via Chelsea’s development system—made 95 appearances for the senior team. Under Gareth Southgate, he was part of the England team for the last three major international competitions, but new head coach Thomas Tuchel has not called him up this season.

Gallagher set for Tottenham medical after €40m deal agreed

After agreeing to pay up to €40 million (£34.6 million) for the England midfielder, Tottenham appears to have defeated Aston Villa to sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid. When Gallagher came to Spain from Chelsea in 2024, he signed a five-year deal with Atlético, which he is currently 18 months into. Spurs are anticipated to pay about £25 million up front. Bonuses are said to have the potential to raise the contract to the £34 million Atlético paid Chelsea.

Since Conor Gallagher was nearing the conclusion of his Chelsea contract, Tottenham has been intrigued by him. Ange Postecoglou believed he would be the ideal addition to their midfield. To Postecoglou’s dismay, Spurs were never able to complete the trade despite interest spanning many windows.

However, Spurs have never needed Gallagher as much as they do right now. Due to underinvestment and injuries to important players, their midfield has stagnated in recent years. Too many of the new players haven’t been prepared or adequate.
