‘Roo are still our captain’ – Joe Hart insists Wayne is right man to be England skipper

Despite wearing the captain’s armband for England’s 2-0 victory over Lithuania at Wembley today, Joe Hart is adamant that Wayne Rooney is still the right man for the job.

It has been a testing season for both Hart and Rooney. Goalkeeper Hart was sent out on loan by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola to Italian side Torino, while Rooney has fallen down the pecking order both at United and with the Three Lions. He was not named in the squad for the double header with Germany and Lithuania.

Hart has leapt to the defence of beleaguered Rooney, insisting that Rooney is still captain and Hart knows his place.

Speaking to ITV, Hart said: “Wayne Rooney is our captain, I know that. And I would imagine Hendo (Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson) and I were just the last men standing today.

“It’s obviously a proud moment to captain your country, but I know my place in this team.

“I just want to keep trying to perform to the best level.”

England are next in action in June, when they take on Scotland, before a Friendly with France three days later.
