Currently a free agent, Italian forward Mario Balotelli could be set to complete a shock move in the coming days.

Brazilian club Flamengo is reportedly on the verge of signing Mario Balotelli, according to multiple reports.

Gazzetta dello Sport claim that the troubled Italian striker is in talks to join Brazilian side Flamengo on a two-and-a-half-year deal until 31 December 2021, earning €4.5 million per year.

The former AC Milan, Inter Milan and Manchester City striker most recently turned out for Marseille, for whom he scored eight goals in 15 appearances, but opted not to extend his short-term stay with the Ligue 1 club. He was previously linked with a move to Premier League’s side West Ham and Serie A sides Hellas Verona and Fiorentina, but is now seemingly closing in on a move to Brazil.

“Balotelli is a great player and we’ve been in contact. He has shown interest in playing for Flamengo, but nothing has been decided yet. He’s a great player, but there are still many things to be agreed”,  the club’s President Rodolfo Landim told UOL.

If the deal goes through, Balotelli would become the latest player formerly based in Europe to move to South America after Dani Alves’ move to Sao Paulo earlier this month and Boca Juniors’s capture of former Roma captain Daniele De Rossi.

Balotelli has scored 14 goals in 36 appearances for Italy since making his international debut in 2010.
