Lewandowski admits Jurgen Klopp has been crucial to his career

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski admits that current Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been crucial to his career as the Polish international prepares to face the Reds in the last-16 tie of the Champions League.

Klopp brought Lewandowski to Borussia Dortmund from lech Poznan in 2010 and helped him become one of the best number nines in the world.

The 30-year-old scored 103 goals in 187 appearances, before joining rivals Bayern on a free transfer in 2014.

He has gone on to win four Bundesliga titles since, but is yet to lift a Champions League trophy with the Bavarians.

Speaking to the media, Lewandowski talked about Klopp and said: “I’m always happy when I see Jürgen. But we will probably have little time this time.

“He’s a coach who has been crucial to my life as a footballer. I have to be thankful to him for where I am in my life right now. He’s just great – as a person and as a coach. We’ve talked so much about football and life, and I’ve learned a lot from him.

“Tactically, there are a few things. But what he has given me above all is the belief that I can play at the highest level. He has awakened this idea in me and has always shown me the next step forward. I didn’t know that I had such great potential.”

Liverpool and Bayern Munich face each other on the 19th February in the first leg of the last-16 tie in the Champions League at Anfield. The two teams will meet at the Allianz Arena next month.
