The Bayern goalkeeper might be nearing an end to his time as an international footballer.

Neuer may be considering calling it quits on Germany after next summer’s European Championships.

Within the few, the Germany national team has seen many world class players go. Some famous names include Lukas Podolski, Mesut Ozil and Philipp Lahm. As they make way for a promising pedigree of young players, Joachim Low could be sorted for many more seasons.

After the possible exit of Kroos post-EURO 2020, Germany fans could be set to see another sad retirement. According to BILD, the Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is considering retiring from international duty. The 33-year-old will also decide on his future after 2020’s European championships.

That way, the spat between Germany’s number one goalkeeper and contender Marc Andre ter Stegen would be settled off the pitch. The Bayern Munich keeper started ahead of Ter Stegen in their most recent qualifiers for next summer’s tournament but the simmering tension between the two has making as many headlines as the side’s results as they seek to recover on the pitch after their disastrous performance at the 2018 World Cup.

After the conclusion of the Russia tournament, Neuer said: “I don’t know if I’ll still be around in 2022 because there are many things to take into account. I have to see how my body is feeling, how much energy will still I have at that age.”

After failing to get any playing time in their recent Euro qualifiers against Netherlands and Northern Ireland, Ter Stegen, with 22 caps to his name, voiced his dissatisfaction. Neuer then demanded stronger support from his fellow keeper and said his starts were down to good performances before Ter Stegen responded this week, saying Neuer’s comments were “inappropriate”.

Neuer is one of the best goalkeepers of all time and he will leave behind a huge legacy. He has set the foundations for up and coming goalkeepers, with many of them trying to replicate the German’s playing style. He is very much an example of a modern-day sweeper keeper.

One will often find him loitering outside of his safety box, collecting the ball from danger and using his composure to get the ball out to his defenders. It also helps that he is more than able between the sticks, being very versatile within his shot-stopping.
