Former Holland star Wesley Sneijder’s new look has gone viral on social media just two weeks after retiring from the game.

The Dutch midfielder played for some of Europe’s top clubs during his 17-year career, winning plenty of major honors in the process. He was also the star man in Inter Milan’s treble-winning campaign of 2009-10.

Sneijder also scored 31 goals in a record 134 appearances for the Netherlands national team and was a World Cup finalist in 2010. He ended his career aged 35 after scoring 18 goals in 29 matches for Qatar-based Al-Gharafa SC.

Some footballers like to keep themselves in top physical condition even after they retire. David Beckham, for example, still looks in tip-top shape six years after hanging up his boots. Former AC Milan star Kaka, can be seen working out on social media, as well.

Others, however, end up enjoying the fruits of retirement and let themselves go a bit. Sneijder, it would appear, unquestionably falls into the second category of retired ex-footballers. Wesley Sneijder announced two weeks ago that he was hanging up his boots. And since then we had not seen him, but the Dutchman surprised everyone in the VIP area. The footballer has put on quite a bit of weight.

Sneijder was sat in Willem II’s VIP area to watch the match against Emmen. Even though he was not on the pitch, all the media attention was on him.

Because nobody was expecting Sneijder to look so different to how he was on the field of play. The Dutchman’s belly was notably larger than usual. Photos of the 35-year-old did not take long to go viral. “He’s already enjoying his retirement,” some people said. Others have predicted how he will look in a couple of years time. He is even being compared to Maradona.

Sneijder has returned to his hometown club Utrecht where he has taken up a director role.
