The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric inked a huge contract with AC Milan. On Monday, July 14, the club made an official statement confirming the information. Modric’s remarkable 13-year career at Real Madrid, where he rose to become the team’s most renowned player, comes to an end with this contract.

With great pleasure, AC Milan announced in an official statement that Luka Modric had agreed to a contract with the team through June 30, 2026, with the possibility of a one-year extension through June 30, 2027.

The 39-year-old Croatian midfielder will contribute his expertise to a Milan team desperate to regain its former glory following a poor eighth-place Serie A finish the previous season. The statement added that Luka Modric will don the Rossoneri’s number 14 shirt.

According to Italian media, Modric will not begin practicing with his teammates until August. He was in Milan earlier Monday for medical examinations. Modric posted a video on the club’s social media accounts, saying, “I’m very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career.” He added a hearty hug for everyone.

Modric joins Milan after 13 seasons at Real Madrid

After leading Madrid to 28 titles—six European Cups, six Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four Spanish leagues, two Copas del Rey, and five Spanish Super Cups—Modric declared his departure from the Spanish superpower in May.

Last season, Milan missed out on a European spot after finishing eighth in Serie A. Following the season, the Italian team rehired Massimiliano Allegri as coach, taking Sérgio Conceição’s place after he was fired.

Allegri led Juventus to five consecutive championships from 2015 to 2019 after winning the Italian League for the first time with Milan in 2011. Allegri allegedly called Carlo Ancelotti, the former coach of Milan and Madrid, to inquire about Modric’s performance. Then, last month, Igli Tare, the new Milan sporting director, went to Croatia’s training camp to finalize the agreement with Modric.

Modric couldn’t join his new team until he finished playing for Madrid at the event in the United States, even though the contract was made prior to the Club World Cup. In Modric’s last game with the team, Madrid lost to Paris Saint-Germain 4-0 in the semifinals.
