Celta Vigo have appointed Oscar Garcia as their new head coach until the end of the 2019-20 season. After four straight defeats, the Spanish struggling side have sacked Fran Escriba following a 1-0 loss to Getafe on Sunday.

Languishing down in 18th place in the La Liga table, they have turned to Garcia to help lead an upturn in their fortunes. Garcia’s coaching career has seen him work in various leagues across Europe, including a spell with Maccabi Tel Aviv where he won the title in Israel.

He was also crowned champion twice in Austria while in charge of Salzburg and was most recently at Olympiacos, leaving his role at the Greek club last April. His first game in charge of Celta will see him return to Camp Nou, as his new employers travel to table-topping Barcelona on Saturday.

Meanwhile, another La Liga struggling club, Leganes have announced experienced Mexican boss Javier Aguirre as their new head coach.

Aguirre, who has previously led Spanish sides Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza and Espanyol, replaces interim coach Luis Cembranos on a deal that runs through until the end of 2019-20. Cembranos stepped up from the reserve side following Mauricio Pellegrino’s sacking last month and oversaw Leganes’ only win of the league season so far against Real Mallorca nine days ago.

However, Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Eibar leaves them still bottom of LaLiga and six points adrift of 17th-placed Mallorca.

Former Spanish top tier side Almeria, which is now playing in the Segunda Division, have appointed Real Madrid great Guti as head coach, it was confirmed on Monday. Spanish second-tier side Almeria announced his arrival in a series of tweets after the departure of Pedro Emanuel.

It is Guti’s first senior coaching role, having previously coached Madrid’s youth team and served as an assistant at Turkish giant Besiktas. The 43-year-old joins Almeria, which is second in the Segunda table but 10 points adrift of leader Cadiz after 14 rounds in the race for La Liga promotion.
