A Swedish football match turned into pandemonium, with the turf set on fire and players dragged from the pitch. IFK Norrkoping fans were upset with their team during the Allsvenskan relegation/promotion match against Orgryte IS.
Orgryte, a second-tier team, won the first leg 3-0 before facing Norrkoping at Nya Parken. The first half was often disrupted by angry supporters. Not only were the home fans ejected from the stadium, but so were several of the away supporters. This was due to them attempting to damage a fence only seven minutes after kickoff.
The fan wrath began to flare in the latter phases of the contest. Fireworks were thrown into the pitch in the 86th minute, prompting the referee to call time out. He instantly signalled to the tunnel to remove the players from the pitch. However, there was much anxiety as portions of the synthetic pitch caught fire due to fireworks.
Swedish fans tear down fences and throw flares during playoff match
There were horrible scenes at a Swedish relegation/promotion match when fans of IFK Norrkoping witnessed their ground set on fire. After repeated stoppages due to fan interference, play resumed for the last time once security evacuated the home stands, the Sportbladet daily said.
The match finished goalless, culminating in Orgryte’s promotion to the Allsvenskan after 16 years, and the visiting supporters sought to flood the pitch to celebrate, causing police to spray fans and players with fire extinguishers to calm the throng, the report claimed.
Amel Mujanic, an Orgryte midfielder, condemned the police for not allowing supporters to rejoice but stated that he did not mind getting sprayed. “I got a bit in my mouth when I was ready to hug the fans. “It was a little good,” he told the Swedish site.
Noah Christoffersson, his teammate and forward, had a different reaction, stating, “It wasn’t so nice; I can feel the taste in my mouth.” It tasted nasty and strange… like sand.” Orgryte qualified for the Allsvenskan for the first time in 2009.
