Mikael Lustig, a former defender for Celtic, has been connected to a position as the next sports director of Vasteras SK (VSK), a Swedish team. Although the former right-back laid up his boots in 2022, there have been rumours that the former Swedish international is working behind the scenes at Vasteras, who were just promoted back to the Allsvenskan in his own country.

Kalle Karlsson, the club’s current sporting director and head coach, has been identified as one of Hammarby’s top managerial candidates as they look to replace Kim Hellberg. The 37-year-old just took over as head coach of Middlesbrough, an English Championship team, in place of Rob Edwards.

In the event that Karlsson departs the team this winter, Lustig is reportedly one of the top contenders for the position and has been referred to as “highly sought after” by Swedish media. Lustig started working as a part-time coach with VSK last year, primarily with the youth youngsters. The former full-back is now being considered for a promotion at the Swedish team.

Lustig seems to be a candidate for the position of sporting director at Västerås Sportklubb, a second-tier Swedish team. According to Expressen, Lustig is a candidate to take over at the club if Kalle Karlsson decides to depart for Hammarby. The former Celtic defender seems to be highly valued by VSK, who are now reorganising the team to assist them in advancing to the next level.

Despite retiring from football in 2022, Lustig has never concealed his desire to continue playing the sport. However, it appears that his ultimate priority was to become a head coach. In 2024, Lustig stated to Aftonbladet, “I assist at VSK’s academy several times a week.” It’s been enjoyable since we started running a few weeks ago.

“You feel grounded and able to contribute when you are a part of a club and football team.” As a head coach, I’m not sure, but it’s absolutely a possibility.
