Garry Thompson believes John Terry can do a better job in organising the team defensively

Former Aston Villa striker Garry Thompson has stated that John Terry’s role at the club is still not clear to him.

Terry was named as a part of Deam Smith’s coaching staff when the former Brentford manager took over the reins in October last year following the sacking of Steve Bruce.

However, that hasn’t changed Villa’s fortunes much, with the duo of Smith and Terry not managing to ease the club’s defensive conundrum.

Villa have conceded a total of 45 goals in the Championship this season under Steve Bruce and Deam Smith and Terry hasn’t been able to do much to stem the flow of goals.

The club’s hopes of securing a promotion playoff spot have taken a battering as a result of their poor defensive record, with the Lions still languishing 13th in the standings, seven points shy of Derby County for the final playoff spot.

And Thompson feels that Terry should do a better job in organising the team defensively.

“No-one seems to really know at the minute [what Terry’s role at the club is],” Thompson told BBC Radio WM. “If you go in as a coach, you want to make the impression on people, you want to start showing people what you can do.

“The problem at Villa is they cannot defend. They are unbalanced anyway, but they don’t defend. Therefore, that is tailormade for a young coach to go in and do his bit.

“At the moment, not an awful lot is happening. Maybe he hasn’t got the players he wants in there, but you should still be able to fashion them into some way shape or form, so they can defend a lot better.”

Terry partnered James Chester at the heart of the defence last season to lead the Lions to the playoff finals where they were eventually defeated by Fulham.
