Five Things Learned From The Capital One Cup FInal

Manchester City have won the Capital One Cup, beating Liverpool 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1- draw at Wembley Stadium.

Here are five things learned from the game:

  1. Jurgen Klopp is not quite there yet regarding tactics, but he cares about his players.
In his first season in England, Klopp has guided the Reds to a cup final, and are progressing in the Europa League. The high-intensity style he deploys didn’t really work today, however when Mama Sakho took a knock to the head, Klopp was adamant he was going off, even if Sakho wanted to stay on.
     2. City are worse in defence when Vincent Kompany is not there
City’s backline is far more vulnerable when the Belgian is absent, he is a key cog in their machine. And he is even able to drag those alongside him up to his level.
     3. Simon Mignolet needs to be more consistent
He was at fault for Fernandinho’s goal, yet he produced a fine save earier. This after a fine Europa League display against Augsburg in Thursday. He is probably too inconsistent for his own good, yet Liverpool do not really have a quality backup option.
     4. Pellegrini kept faith in his Willy
City’s soon-to-be outgoing manager has chosen Willy Caballero as his Cup keeper, while Joe Hart is normally between the sticks for league games. It would have been all too easy to drop Caballero for the final after the hammering by Chelsea, but Pellegrini kept faith and was rewarded with the saves in the shoot-out to hand City the Cup.
     5. Pell’s Fernandinho masterstroke
Fernandinho was deployed this week, both in Kiev and again today, out on the wing. But this tactical move has worked in both ties, and it has resulted in a trophy, and there could be more to come..
