Former Liverpool captain and club legend Steven Gerrard has backed Virgil Van Dijk to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

VVD finished behind Lionel Messi in this year FIFA’s Best awards. However, Gerrard has labelled VVD’s performance this year as faultless and hence backs him to win the French award over Lionel Messi.

Speaking after Rangers’ draw with Feyenoord, Gerrard responded when asked by a Dutch reporter if Van Dijk should win: “Yes, 100 per cent.

“I’m Messi’s number one fan, for sure. I love the player. Obscene numbers in his game in terms of assists and goals. I’m definitely a Messi fan, in the gang.

“But if you talk about consistency from one player over a year, who wins the European Cup and is absolutely faultless in every performance, that means you deserve to win the Ballon d’Or.”

Should VVD win the award, he will be the first defender to do so since the legendary Fabio Cannavaro who won it in 2006 after leading Italy to the World Cup in Germany.

As for Messi, the Barcelona star is seeking to win his world record sixth Ballon d’Or title. He is on course for yet another La Liga this season and might even get a seventh by next year!
