Sunderland (Association Football Club) commonly referred to as The Black Cats or simply known as Sunderland is a English football club.

The club was founded in 1879 and are is currently competing in the Championship, the second tier of English football.

Black Cats are soon to be playing League One after being relegated from the Championship.

The team has been playing its home matches at the Stadium of Light since 1997, having previously played at Roker Park.

The original capacity of Stadium of Light was 42,000 which was increased to 49,000 following expansion in 2000.

Black Cats share intense rivalry with Newcastle United, it is a long-standing rivalry. This famous fixture is called “Tyne-Wear Derby”.

Sunderland titles

At first the Black Cats have played in an all blue strip from their formation until 1884.

Since 1908, the club wore red and white halved strip, which led to the club being nicknamed as “The Black Cats”.

In 1977, a new badge was introduced which included the ship, football and the background of red and white stripes.

This badge was used until the relocation from Roker Park to the Stadium of Light.

However, since 1997 another crest was introduced which contains two lions, the black cats of Sunderland.

Fun fact: Sunderland has more league titles than Manchester City.

The team was among the dominant football clubs in England during the 1890s, winning the First Division in 1891–92, 1892–93 and 1894–95.

Football World Championship winners in 1895.

Players transfer news has always been active. The highest transfer fee that the club has paid for a player is £17 million for Didier Ndong in 2016 from French side FC Lorient.

The following year the clubs academy product ‘Jordan Pickford’ became the most expensive player sold by the club when he joined Everton for £30 million.

In recent transfer window the club has brought in 15 players. In which 8 players were loaned in and few from from Premier League clubs like Chelsea, Everton and Liverpool.
