Manchester United have booked their place in the next round of the Capital One Cup after comfortably seeing off the challenge of Ipswich Town at Old Trafford tonight.

Goals from Wayne Rooney, a first goal for the club for Andreas Pereira, and Anthony Martial saw the Red Devils through.

United have come undone against lower level opposition more than a few times in League Cup history, losing to the likes of York City, Southend United, and MK Dons last season.

However, an upset never seemed on the cards against the Tractor Boys. United manager Louis van Gaal showed his intentions to take this competition seriously by naming a strong side.

David De Gea started in goal, with the only unfamiliar face being Pereira, making a first start.

For Ipswich, manager Mick McMarthy fielded a completely different side from the one that drew with Birmingham City at the weekend.

United took the game to their opponents from the start, and Pereira hit the post in the first couple of minutes from a Juan Mata cross.

Pereira then forced Ipswich keeper Bartosz Bialkowski into a fine save from a 25 yard drive.

In the 23rd minute, United took the lead, to the disappointment of the 5,000 traveling fans. A long ball forward from Daley Blind was controlled by Rooney, who held off a defender before slotting home past Bialkowski.

Six minutes later Mata was denied by Bialkowski after fine interplay with Marouane Fellaini. Ipswich finally got a chance when Tommy Orr flashed a shot wide.

The second half started with Matteo Darmian denied by Bialkowski. United then doubled their lead through Pereira on the hour, the youngster netting his first senior goal with a superb free-kick.

Mata saw a fierce drive tipped over by Bialkowski, before he was replaced by Martial. Phil Jones also came on for his first action of the season, replacing Chris Smalling.

Memphis Depay came on for Rooney with ten minutes to go, and he set up Martial for the third in injury-time, the Frenchman continuing his impressive start to life in England.

United will face another Championship side In the fourth round, Middlesbrough the visitors to Old Trafford.
