Former Arsenal star thinks Arsenal should learn from Chelsea

Former Arsenal star Per Mertesacker has advised Arsenal to learn to be ruthless like Chelsea. Arsenal began the Premier League poorly by losing to Manchester City and Chelsea. However, the Gunners have since picked up the pace by registering nine wins on the trot across all competitions. They are currently fourth in the Premier League with 18 points, only two points behind Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

Even though none of Arsenal’s wins this season has come against strong teams, the impact that Emery has had on the club after replacing Wenger who was in charge for 22 years, is pretty commendable.

However, Mertesacker believes that Arsenal can learn a thing or two from Chelsea who he thinks have been ‘ruthless’ for years.

Discussing Petr Cech’s 11-year stint at Chelsea before he joined Arsenal, Mertesacker said, “His background at Chelsea, that is the way he won. You can feel when we went there it was always tough and we struggled to deal with the intensity and that defensive ruthlessness.

We can take that on. We have to learn and adapt to what Chelsea have brought. We are finding the talent, but how can we make them cope with the league and cope with all of the money and madness that comes in? We have to get rid of the feeling that we have everything in England and we don’t need to assess other countries.

It is just wrong. Sometimes we can send them away from home, and away from their comfort zone.  I am now responsible for giving them the right ingredients so they can cope with that and can cope with going away.”

Arsenal’s next match is against Leicester City next Monday.
