Red Devils back on track in Champions League

Manchester United got their Champions League campaign back on track with a 2-1 victory over German club Wolfsburg at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils lost their opening tie in Group B away to PSV Eindhoven, so a victory here was important.

But they fell behind early on, Daniel Caligiuri cutting into the left side of United’s penalty area, exchanged passes, and beat the offside trap to fire home past David De Gea.

The United defence will feel frustrated at allowing Caligiuri to wriggle free.

United battled hard from the early disappointment to force their way back into the game.

Bastian Schweinsteiger got a half-volley on target, Juan Mata had an effort deflected over by the head of Dante, the former Bayern Munich defender.

Anthony Martial was next to try his luck, dragging a shot wide after a tricky run.

Wayne Rooney was next to be frustrated as he blazed a chance over from the edge of the six-yard box.

Memphis then had a header saved by Diego Benaglio, as the United pressure grew.

United were then awarded a penalty goalscorer Caligiuri was adjudged to have handled the ball from a Mata cross, the Spaniard tucking home the resultant penalty.

Louis van Gaal made a change at the break, bringing on Ashley Young for Antonio Valencia.

In the 53rd minute, United took the lead through defender Chris Smalling, slotting home from a Mata back heel.

Andreas Pereira came on for Memphis on the hour, and was quickly booked for catching Christian Trasch.

A pair of former Premier League players came on for Wolfsburg: former Chelsea man Andre Schurrle, and ex-Arsenal striker Nicolas Bendtner.

And Schurrle almost brought the scores level, firing just wide of the post.

Morgan Schneiderlin was perhaps fortunate not to pick up a second yellow card for a foul on Julian Draxler. Ricardo Rodriguez shot wide from the free kick.

United held on for the win though. CSKA Moscow beating PSV 3-2 means all four teams have three points from two games.

United’s next task in the group is a double-header with CSKA.
